Please note that due to the current FCDO travel advice, the December 2020 Mountain Safety and Leadership Course has been cancelled. Although we are deeply disappointed that we are unable to run the course this year, plans are already underway to run the course in December 2021!
This course will be the minimum requirement for anyone to act as a Ski Club Rep as part of our new in resort Rep service and on our extensive range of Ski Club Holidays. This course will once again contain high-level instruction, avalanche safety training and leadership skills development – all led by our expert team out in resort. As in previous years the course is available for anyone of the Purple Ski Club ski standard and above. Please note if you have already passed the previous Reps course you do not need to attend this course and you are already qualified to act as a Rep
- Return transfers from Geneva airport to Tignes · Half board accommodation at the Hotel Levanna ***
- 11-day full area lift pass · All course content
There are four elements to the course, each of which will be assessed at the end of the course to make sure you reach the required standard.
Ski Performance (led by Andy Jerram)
This technical module will explore ski and snowboard performance. Using BASI trainers we will introduce modern ski performance techniques as well as introducing kit and equipment and how it affects our ski performance. The module will be delivered over two days on snow.
Day 1 – On Snow
Objective – To introduce correct ski/snowboard performance.
Day 2 – Training and Development
Objective – To introduce personal skiing/snowboarding performance assessment and training
Ski Club Repping (led by Owen Chapman)
This module will aim to introduce candidates to what makes a great Ski Club Rep. It will look at different approaches to group management in all aspects of life and how we can bring that experience to the slopes. It will explore industry standard techniques on effective and safe group management with a mixture of off and on snow sessions throughout the two weeks.
We’ll start by looking at what makes a great rep, before moving on to looking at creating a team and how the rep impacts this process, how we can communicate better and how to manage and control groups.
All Terrain Leadership (led by Bruce Goodlad)
This on-snow module will look at effective leading and group management in variable and off piste terrain. It will explore the considerations we must make when travelling in off piste terrain, what equipment is needed when skiing away from the piste and how to ensure your group are safe.
Avalanche Rescue Skills (led by Bruce Goodlad, Mike Austin, Graham McMahon and Kathy Murphy)
The final module will take place at the end of the course and will teach best practice avalanche rescue technique. It will introduce candidates to correct accident procedure in the event of an avalanche and use practical exercises to assess candidates in effective rescue scenarios.
The level 1 American Avalanche Association Avalanche Safety Course will make up the main body of this module with an additional day on burial scenarios and effective rescue. It will be delivered on snow over three days, including a theoretical morning/evening session indoors.
