Romania is another Eastern European destination offering good value, albeit fairly limited skiing. The friendly locals, impressive scenery and different ski culture make it a great option for a budget-conscious but adventurous skier or snowboarder.
The most famous resort (to people outside of the country that is) is Poiana Braşov, which is located around four hours to the north of Bucharest. Sinaia is nearby and has around 20km of slopes extending up above 2000m, making it slightly more snowsure. Both would make a good two-centre trip, especially as the local slopes are limited at both.
Most of Romania’s skiing is best suited to beginners and intermediates, but for more advanced skiers and riders, the ski touring potential of the country’s mountains is finally being tapped into. Instruction here is generally good and is excellent value.
