A lot of us have been itching to get back on the slopes. The Coronavirus pandemic ended the European winter season prematurely and it’s been a few months since the world has been able to enjoy the slopes again. Although the full European season will be a while yet, it’s encouraging to see glacier skiing and Southern hemisphere skiing in full flow!

We wanted to give you a quick overview of where snowsports are currently happening:

Southern Hemisphere

The main resorts in Australia and New Zealand have opened their doors to snowsport enthusiasts to enjoy their slopes. New Zealand had heavy snowfall to start the season with nearly 50cms in one day fallen in Mt Hutt in June. Add that to no social distancing and face masks needed, New Zealand is currently having a fantastic season.

As for Australia, majority of resorts opened last weekend with further resorts opening later this month. Snow conditions are also positive with regular 20cm top ups so far. Social distancing is advised at 1.5m (5 feet) and face covering too is enforced on lifts. Australia’s season will probably be a more realistic reflection on how the European season will look.

Glacier Skiing

Closer to home, glaciers in Austria, France, Italy, Norway and Switzerland are starting to open for their summer ski programme. England have lowered quarantine restrictions for certain countries, which the government are calling “air bridge travel”. So, if you’re looking to get your summer ski fix there’s potential to ski in Europe nowPay close attention to changing government guidelines before traveling.

Indoor snow centres are currently waiting for government guidance on whether they can reopen soon. The facilities, like gyms, are waiting for the green light to reopen. However, outdoor dry slopes are beginning to open again. Snowsport England currently have a guide on which facilities have opened.

It was unfortunate for Scottish skiing that the season had to end early with great snowfall this season. At time of writing, all Scottish snowsports facilities are currently closed until further notice. In Wales, Llandudno snowsports centre has now opened with other slopes ready to follow suit soon too.

Keep Fit

Not able to head to the slopes, but want to keep fit for next season? During lockdown Ski Club Honorary President Chemmy Alcott hosted fitness classes designed to help with ski related muscle groups. 100s of participants joined the classes and Chemmy will be looking to do more before the season starts in Autumn. The previous session is all available on the Ski Club YouTube Channel.

GB snowsport athletes Laurence Willows, Jaz Taylor and Reece Bell also shared their workout routines via Ski Club’s Instagram channel. Laurence talked us through a core workout, Jaz educated us on beneficial exercises you can do at home and Reece gave us an insight into her multi-sport routine. All are available to check out on our Instagram.
